Strapless World Competition 1024 1024 Freeride Tarifa
WIND, WAVES & NO STRAPS

The Magic of Strapless Freestyle Tarifa.

The horizon at Valdevaqueros is once again a canvas of vibrant kites and gravity-defying maneuvers. This year, the “Kite-Surf” discipline—commonly known as Strapless—takes center stage in Tarifa that has long been considered the wind capital of the world. From 29th June until 3rd July, Tarifa will be home to the new world championship competition of freestyle strapless kitesurfing.

As many competition, It’ll be held at Valdevaqueros Beach, where the best riders in the world will be present to compete in this demanding discipline. It’s an honor for Tarifa to host this competition, proving once again that this small town remains the undisputed heart of the global kitesurfing scene.

29th JUNE - 3rd JULY

An Annual Tradition with a Twist

While the competition is an annual highlight for the town, you won’t find it on the same calendar page every year.

Organizers typically set a “waiting window”—a period where the world’s best riders stay on standby, ready to descend on Tarifa the moment the forecast turns “epic.” Whether it falls in the early heat of June or the gusty transitions of September, the event follows the wind, ensuring that when the green flag drops, the conditions are perfect for history-making performances.

How the Waiting Period Works

Unlike a football match, a kite competition doesn’t have a fixed “kick-off” time. Here is the process:

  • The Window: The GKA sets a range of dates (e.g., September 1st–5th)
  • Daily Riders’ Meeting: Every morning during that window (usually around 09:00 or 10:00 AM), the Race Director and judges meet at Valdevaqueros to check the wind.
  • The Call: They then announce the “First Possible Start.” If the wind is low, they might say “Next announcement at 1:00 PM.”
  • The Flags: If you are at the beach, look for the flags. Orange/Yellow Flag means this is the “warning.” A heat is about to start in a few minutes. Green Flag means the heat is ON. The competition has officially started. Red Flag means the heat is over, or the competition is paused.

What is the Strapless Competition?

Unlike traditional kitesurfing, where riders are strapped into their boards like a snowboard, the Strapless discipline (often part of the GKA Kite World Tour) is pure artistry. Riders use boards similar to traditional surfboards with no foot bindings.

This means that every jump, flip, and rotation requires perfect timing and a deep understanding of the wind. If the rider loses contact for even a millisecond, the board is gone. This “new” discipline has quickly become a fan favorite because it highlights the raw connection between the athlete, the board, and the elements.

Why Valdevaqueros?

Valdevaqueros Beach is more than just a beautiful stretch of sand; it is a natural wind machine. Situated at the narrowest point of the Strait of Gibraltar, it benefits from the famous Venturi Effect, which accelerates the wind as it passes between Europe and Africa.

  • The Levante: A strong, warm easterly wind that provides the “big air” conditions riders love for high-intensity tricks.
  • The Poniente: A cooler, steadier westerly wind that offers smoother water, perfect for technical, stylish maneuvers.

A Hub for the Elite

Tarifa isn’t just a host; it’s a training ground. Hosting an event of this caliber brings together a community of industry legends, rising stars, and thousands of spectators. From the iconic beach bars like Tangana and Tumbao to the competitive arena in the water, the atmosphere is electric, cementing Tarifa’s reputation as the “Mecca” of wind sports.
