The IKO Level 4 Advanced phase is where you transcend basic riding and begin to truly express your style on the water. This stage shifts the focus from simply staying upwind to mastering the art of aerodynamics and high-performance maneuvers.

At Freeride Tarifa, you will learn the technical precision required for your first kitesurfing jumps, coordinating a sharp board edge with a vertical kite send to achieve lift-off. By completing this phase, you evolve from a competent rider into a versatile athlete capable of navigating Tarifa’s most intense Levante days with style and total authority.
Master the IKO Level 4
In this advanced phase, the curriculum shifts from safety basics to style, airtime, and advanced rescue skills. Here is what our instructors will focus on:

Jumping & Airtime
You will learn to coordinate the board’s edge and the kite’s “send” to perform and land your very first basic jumps safely.
Stylish Transitions
Mastering the Power Jibe (turning from heel-side to toe-side without stopping) and Advanced Jump Transitions, such as the “downloop” or “carving” turns, allowing you to change direction with fluid speed.

Toe-side Riding
Perfecting the ability to ride with your back to the kite. This is a fundamental skill for wave riding and more complex tricks.
Advanced Rescue
Safety remains paramount. You will learn how to perform a Rider Recovery (assisting another kiter who has lost their board or is in distress) and Advanced Self-Launching techniques for when you are alone on the beach.

Why level 4 is a major kitesurfing milestone
Beyond just looking cool on the water, achieving Level 4 is the official prerequisite for anyone wanting to enter the professional world. If you ever decide you want to become an IKO Assistant Instructor or IKO Instructor, you must be certified as a Level 4 Rider first.
In Tarifa, Level 4 clinics are incredibly popular because our strong, steady winds provide the perfect “kick” and “elevator” for learning to jump safely. Once you reach this stage, the thrilling world of advanced tricks opens up completely.
Choose your advanced progression
Depending on your personal style and goals, you can take your advanced progression into various two directions during your kitesurfing lessons in Tarifa:

Old School
Old school is all about big air, style, and massive “hangtime.” It is very popular in Tarifa because the powerful Levante wind helps you stay in the air much longer. You will learn:
- Jumping & Airtime: You will learn to coordinate the board’s edge and the kite’s “send” to perform and land your very first basic jumps safely.
- Grab Variations: Adding style by grabbing different parts of your board (Tail grab, Indy, or Roast Beef) while mid-air.
- Board-Offs: The classic move where you take the board off your feet in mid-air and put it back on before landing smoothly.
- Rotations: Master the Backroll and Frontroll, which are the absolute foundation of all aerial tricks.
Freestyle
Freestyle is more about coordination, power, and often involves keeping the kite lower in the window for explosive speed. You will learn:
- Unhooking: Taking the chicken loop off your harness to ride using only your arm strength—the ultimate gateway to pro-level tricks.
- Raileys: An explosive jump where you flick your body out behind you while unhooked.
- Surface Handle Passes: Learning to pass the bar behind your back while the board is still gliding on the water.
- Kite Loops: A high-adrenaline move where you loop the kite in a full circle to get a horizontal “pull” that sends you flying across the water.
Strapless
Moving into IKO Level 4 in the Strapless (directional surfboard) category is like taking the training wheels off. It’s about pure connection, balance, and learning to dance with the board rather than being locked into it.
- Board Management & The “Sticky” Waterstart: Without straps, you can’t just pull the board to you. You learn to use the wind and water pressure to keep the board “glued” to your feet.
- Stance & Dynamic Edging: A surfboard doesn’t ride like a twin-tip. You have to find the “sweet spot” over the fins. Moving your feet along the stringer to adjust for speed or carving. Learning to edge using the rail of the surfboard while maintaining a relaxed, surf-style body position.
- Fluid Transitions (Gybes & Tacks) : This is where the “style” comes in. Changing direction without sinking is the ultimate goal.
- Strapless Air & Freestyle: Once you’re comfortable riding, it’s time to defy gravity using the Pop “ollie” technique to lift the board off the water. Learning how to tilt the board so the wind pins it against your feet while you’re in the air.
Your path to kitesurfing mastery: IKO Level 4 Graduation
Becoming an IKO Level 4 rider is not just about learning tricks; it is about achieving total autonomy and mastery over your gear in any condition. Whether you choose the high-flying path of Old School Big Air or the technical intensity of Freestyle, Tarifa offers the ultimate playground to push your limits.
