Every great kitesurfer started with their feet firmly planted on the sand. If you have ever watched the colorful kites dancing over the Strait of Gibraltar and wondered how to join them, the IKO Level 1 Discovery course is your absolute starting line.
At Freeride Tarifa, we know that mastering wind theory and safety systems on land is the secret to a confident and safe progression in the water. This guide will walk you through exactly what to expect on your first day of training, taking you from a curious spectator to a prepared pilot ready to harness the power of the wind.
The Transition from Spectator to Pilot: IKO Level 1 Discovery

Your first day of kitesurfing in Tarifa begins with the essential where you focus entirely on the “Discovery” phase of the official IKO syllabus. Our goal for the IKO Level 1 course is simple but crucial: understanding the wind and mastering kite control on land before you ever step into the water.
Safe Site and Wind Assessment in Tarifa

The session starts on the wide, beautiful sands of Los Lances or Valdevaqueros, where you will immerse yourself in the wind theory. Before flying, a safe site assessment is mandatory. You will learn to identify potential hazards like obstacles, bathers, or power lines, and understand the critical differences between onshore, offshore, and side-shore winds.
What Is Wind Theory: Levante vs. Poniente
Tarifa is the wind capital of Europe, making it the perfect classroom. You will learn to read the local conditions, identifying wind direction, strength, and gustiness. We will teach you how to distinguish between the steady, cool Poniente wind and the powerful, warm Levante wind.
The Wind Window Explained
Understanding the “Wind Window” is the absolute cornerstone of this introduction. You will learn exactly where the kite generates maximum pull in the power zone and where it stays calm in the neutral zone. This provides you with the conceptual mental map you need before you even touch the gear.
Kitesurf Equipment Setup and Anatomy

Once the theory is set, our focus shifts to the technical anatomy of the gear. You will assist your instructor in the setup of a leading-edge inflatable kite. You will learn how to identify the canopy, struts, and bladder. We will guide you through the correct way to pump the kite, connect the four lines without any twists, and perform a thorough pre-flight check to verify that the equipment is airworthy before launching.
Mastering the Three Safety Systems
A major portion of this first day is dedicated to your safety and the safety of everyone on the beach. Your instructor will walk you through the three stages of the kite safety systems. You will practice triggering the quick release (QR1) on the chicken loop to instantly depower the kite. Next, you will understand the safety leash (QR2) and how to completely jettison the kite in an extreme emergency. This repetitive practice builds the muscle memory required to stay calm in higher winds.

Your First Kite Flight and Piloting Control
The climax of day one is your first flight. Starting with a small trainer kite, you will experience the physical pull of the wind for the very first time. You will practice safely launching and landing the kite using hand signals to communicate with an assistant.

Once in the air, you will begin steering the kite precisely between the 10 and 2 o’clock positions on the wind window clock. By the end of the session, you will not just be holding a bar; You will master both static and dynamic kite control, learning to fly the kite with total precision. You will practice one-handed control while walking, simulating future board starts, and learn how to use the trim system and bar throw to adjust the de-powering of the kite.
