The final stage of your core training, IKO Level 3 Independence, is the moment you transition from a supervised student to a self-sufficient kitesurfer. This is where the training wheels come off. By the end of this stage, you will have the knowledge to analyze any new spot, choose the correct gear for the conditions, and be fully certified to rent equipment and ride anywhere in the world.

What to expect in the IKO 3 course
This phase focuses on technical refinement and building the confidence to navigate the ocean autonomously.

Mastering Upwind
The hallmark of a truly independent rider is the ability to return to your original starting point on the beach. You will focus heavily on edging—learning to use the board’s rail to control your speed and, crucially, to sail upwind against the pull of the kite.
Smooth Transitions
No more stopping and sinking into the water to turn around. You will master kitesurf transitions, allowing you to change direction fluidly without losing momentum. You will learn the precise kite steering and board weight distribution required to carve smoothly from left to right.

Right of Way (ROW)
As an independent rider, you must understand the “Traffic Laws” of the ocean. We dive deeper into the Right of Way rules, ensuring you can navigate safely and confidently among other kiters, even in busy spots.
The power of IKO certification

Get your profile on IKO App
Once your instructor validates your skills, your level is instantly updated on the IKO App. This digital certification signals to kite schools and rental centers worldwide that you are a safe, autonomous rider who doesn’t need constant supervision.
Pro Tip: Keep your IKO App handy on your phone! Most centers in Tarifa and globally will simply scan your digital profile to verify your level instantly before handing over the equipment.
'Tarifa Check': Renting Kite Gear

Learning in Tarifa makes you a highly resilient independent rider. Because you learn in varied and challenging conditions, you will rarely face issues at other spots worldwide.
However, because Tarifa’s famous Levante wind can be exceptionally strong and offshore, local schools implement what is known as the “Tarifa Check” with two rental options:
- Full Rental (Unsupervised): You show your IKO Level 3 card, grab the gear, and hit the water independently.
- Supervised Rental: If you have reached (or are very close to) Level 3 but feel a bit intimidated by the strong Tarifa conditions, you can rent gear with “Supervision.” An instructor keeps a watchful eye on you from the beach and provides a rescue boat service if you get into trouble.
What’s Next? The Bridge to Level 4 (Advanced)
Once you reach IKO Level 3, you have officially finished the “beginner” track. From here, the ocean is your playground.
When you are ready to push your riding into the pro-recreational category—learning jumps, unhooked tricks, or directional wave riding—you can step up to the IKO Level 4 (Advanced) courses. Level 4 is the bridge between simply “riding” and having total technical mastery of the sport.
Master riding upwind, perfect your transitions, and earn the digital IKO certification you need to rent gear anywhere in the world. Join our expert instructors in the wind capital of Europe and take the final step toward total kiteboarding independence.
Unlock your freedom on the water
It’s time to ditch the “student” label and become a fully self-sufficient kitesurfer.
