Known as the wind capital of Europe, Tarifa offers the perfect mix of consistent conditions and wide, sandy beaches, making it the ideal spot to begin your journey. At Freeride Tarifa, we know that the first day can bring a mix of excitement and nerves.

Let’s be clear: you won’t be riding waves on your first day! But you will gain the most fundamental skill: kite control. This post is your roadmap to success, detailing every step of your first few hours on the beach. Get ready to have fun, stay safe, and fall in love with the wind!
What to pack for a kitesurf trip in Tarifa
This detailed packing list has all of the clothes, accessories, and vital stuff you need to tick off to make sure you come ready to go!
- Sunscreen (High SPF)
Essential for your stay. The combination of sun, wind, and water glare is intense. Apply liberally. Please make sure you use a reef safe one. Freeride Tarifa sale at the kite spot the Zinc stick from Jeewin. - Water & Snack
You will be moving! Bring your refillable bottle, you will need it every day and the tap water of Tarifa is drinkable. Small energy bar can also be useful to recover energy during the practice. - Swimsuit or Boardshort
Wear them under your clothes. We provide the wetsuit from the second day! - Sunglasses
The first day is only on land, you won’t lost it. The kite is flying in the air, wearing sunglasses help for a good experience. - Short or Leggin
We don’t give wetsuit on a first day which is only focused on kite control on land. Bring some sportswear like a short or a leggin to get also protected from the sun and feel comfortable seated in the sand. Sportswear adapted to colder days - Windbreaker
April and October are our colder period of the main season, it is recommended to get a windbreaker and a hat.
The Three Pillars of Initiation

Your first lesson, 2 to 3 hours, is entirely dedicated to safety and kite control on sand. We divide the session into three crucial phases:
1. Equipment & Safety
- The Wind Window
Understanding the “wind window” is the foundation of the sport. You’ll learn where the kite has power (the “power zone”) and where it doesn’t. We also introduce the wind direction and local effects. - Setup Of The Gear
You’ll learn how to set up the kite, to connect the lines, and secure the bar. - Safety Systems
You will learn how to use all the safety release systems (the quick release and the leash). Safety is paramount in kitesurfing.
2. Kite Control
- Trainer Kite Or Smaller Size
We often start with a smaller to develop basic steering skills without the full power of a main kite. - Steering & Power Management
With the full-sized kite (usually a Delta/Hybrid shape for beginners), you will practice flying it within the wind window with many different exercices as kite control is the most important, generating and releasing power, and mastering the “figure eight” movement.
3. Body Drag Introduction
On land we introduce the Body Drag stage. Exercises for body dragging in kitesurfing focus on developing core strength, balance, and one-handed kite control to simulate the position you’ll use in the water and some body muscle memories.
Body positioning drills using the practice of “Superman” position on land. Lying on your side with arms and legs extended to get a feel for the streamlined position needed in the water. This helps prevent the common mistake of curling up or twisting your body, which creates drag.

After mastering the basic kite control on land, your second class moves to the water. Body Dragging is the core technique here when you get pulled through the water by the kite without the board. We cover three main types:
- Downwind Drag: To feel the kite’s power and travel straight.
- Upwind Drag (Crucial): This is the most vital skill—using the kite to travel against the wind to retrieve your board after a crash.
- Board Retrieval Drag: Specific drills to grab your board efficiently after dropping it.
Freeride Tarifa’s Top Tips for Day 1

Prioritize Communication (Talk to Your Instructor!)
Always maintain clear communication with your instructor. If you feel tired, if the wind seems too strong and you get scared, or if you simply don’t understand a concept, let them know immediately. Our certified instructors are there to adjust the kite size, the pace of the lesson, and the exercise intensity to your exact needs, ensuring your learning experience is safe and effective at all times.
Safety, Safety, Safety
Kitesurfing is incredibly safe when you know the safety rules and respect the process. Every single movement and drill you learn on Day 1 is designed to familiarize you with the quick release and the safety leash. Learn and respect the kite’s power zones. Understanding the wind window is not just technique; it’s your best life insurance on the water.
Be Patient and Celebrate Personal Progress
Kitesurfing has an initial learning curve. Don’t compare your progress to other students or advanced riders you see in the water. The goal of Day 1 is to master kite control on land. Every small achievement is a victory. Enjoy the process; consistency and patience are your best friends in moving from the sand to the board.
The First Step is the Biggest
Your first kitesurf day in Tarifa will be challenging, rewarding, and incredibly fun. By the end of it, you will have a solid foundation in kite control, and you’ll be well on your way to standing up on the board. The key is leaving the beach knowing the wind and the safety systems. You are no longer just a spectator; you are now part of the kite family. Trust the process, trust your instructor, and get ready for Day 2!
